Theatre Membership
Noosa Arts Theatre was formed in the early 1970s and has been providing community theatre ever since. We do not receive any on-going funding from the government or the council and work very hard to maintain our own theatre and also a high standard of productions for the benefit of our members and the Noosa community.
Being a member of a theatre group is unlike any other club or association. We do not hold regular meetings on regular nights. Because of this it is not always possible for prospective members to become involved straight away. However, there are two or three occasions during the year when all members are invited to join together as a group.
The theatre stages five or six productions each year. These are a mix of dramas, comedies and musicals. Auditions are held for every production, which gives all members, old and new, an equal chance of being chosen for a particular show.
Quite often there is no suitable part for some of our members for quite some time, so we encourage all members to volunteer in the many other aspects of the organisation, such as:
- Publicity and box office
- Design and construct the props, sets and scenery (and maintain the building)
- Costume design and making
- Design, rig and operate lighting; design and operate sound
- During performances: moving props and scenery back-stage; hair and make-up; ‘front-of-house’, either selling programs or raffle tickets, ushering, or bar.
Our theatre charges a very modest membership fee which is payable on application for membership and thereafter on the 1st of January annually. This is mandatory for all volunteers and ensures that the members are covered by insurance whilst they are involved in the theatre’s activities, both on and off stage, during rehearsals or productions, or just working and helping in the theatre.
It also entitles the member to a reduction on ticket prices for shows at Noosa Arts Theatre and other Sunshine Coast Theatre Alliance members.
Our members are sent a newsletter each month to keep them informed of theatre news and events, and should there be any special information, for example auditions, social functions or special meetings a special newsletter is sent to everyone.
We try to stage one show a year that is suitable for children to take part in, and so encourage young people who are interested in theatre.
Where possible, we hold workshops in various aspects of the theatre, for example, writing, lighting, directing, etc.
The theatre also runs an annual National One-Act Playwriting Competition which is open to all established and aspiring playwrights. Macquarie Private Wealth is now the major sponsor, offering $3,000 for the Best Play. (More information is available on the Competitions page.)
Noosa Arts Theatre is a group of diverse people of all ages, who have one thing in common – a love of theatre! We would very much like you to come along and join us.

Social Events
The theatre holds several social events during the year to which all members are invited.
| One of the highlights on the annual calendar is the Volunteer 'Thank You' Party (which incorporates the Rod Taylor Memorial Flower Pot Award) to which all members are encouraged to attend to pay tribute to those who volunteer to make sure the theatre runs smoothly and shows go on. The evening involves not only the light-hearted certificates, but also the 'Volunteer of the Year' award and lots of laughter and entertainment (well, we are a theatre after all!). A light supper is provided and the bar is open (well, we are a theatre after all!). For details of last year's evening go to the Volunteers Thank You Party page. |
