SYNOPSIS
Set in the Old bailey, in the 1950’s “Witness for the Prosecution” shows the real art of suspense and intrigue for which Agatha Christie is renowned.
We see into the lives of Leonard Vole, a young man in London, as his life is upended after he befriends an older woman and is accused of her murder. Many questions arise about his relationship with Miss French, the murdered woman, and how and why she was murdered. We also explore Leonard’s relationship with Romaine, his wife. We must remember that this is post-war England and Romaine is German! Yet Romaine is the one person who can account for Leonard’s whereabouts and, thereby, provide his alibi.
This play also exposes the inner workings of the defence team, led by Sir Wilfrid Robarts and supported by Mr Mayhew, as Leonard pleads his innocence and they plan his defence. Leonard explains how Romaine will vouch for him and Sir Wilfrid meets Romaine and, later, with a stranger who produces some intriguing letters that cast yet another light on proceedings. In court, Leonard’s world is, once again, thrown into chaos as we hear evidence from the police that seems to lead us one way and then further evidence that drags us yet another.
In true Agatha Christie style, we aren’t quite sure who is telling the truth or of Leonard’s guilt, or otherwise, until the very last minute and, even then, we may not be sure!
